SUMMARY:Novel methods for the handling of drilling/exploration data
DESCRIPTION:Purpose and intended learning outcomes\nThis course will teach how the data from exploration campaigns can be curated and archived in an efficient way\, including an integrated interpretation of these data. \nThe student will: \n\ngain a deep understanding of the data life cycle and how to treat data in order to generate value and knowledge in the short and long term.\nget insights into innovative technologies for core description (CT scans\, hyperspectral analysis) in context with Big Data processing.\nunderstand the principles of modern data curation and archiving\, e.g. keywords open data\, FAIR (findable\, accessible\, interoperable\, reusable) data\, linked data.\nget knowledge about the advantage of freely accessible data in scientific and non-scientific environments.\nlearn to utilize relevant data sources as user and data provider.\nintegrate data sets\, e.g. for depth matching and core-log-seismic integration.\n\nPrerequisites (academic\, special skills needed)\nParticipation in 3.1 and 3.2\, or background in exploration drilling including basic knowledge in core and sample handling. \nSchedule and time plan\n15. – 19.06.2020 \nVenue for classroom/lab work\nPotsdam (Geoforschungszentrum) and Berlin (BGR core storage) \nContent and modules\n\nIntroduction to data acquisition at the drill site\nProcessing\, curation and archiving\n\nCore repositories\nCuration DIS (Drilling Information System)\nThe International GeoSample Number (IGSN) unique identifier (in-depth)\nAdvanced scientific instrumentation at core repositories (MSCL\, XRF\, CT\, LIBS)\n\n\nData integration and interpretation\n\nRock classification matching probabilistically\nNew samples against canonical samples (artificial intelligence approach)\nCore-log and core-log-seismic integration\n\n\nData archiving\, release\, publication and accessibility\n\nData and metadata standards/formats and data preparation\nBasic concepts: open data\, FAIR data\, linked data\nData archives (data and metadata standards/formats and data preparation\, data release\, publication and accessibility\, data centres\, portals\, services)\n\n\n\nInstruction and course literature\nNo specific literature to be read prior to the course. Documentation will be distributed during the course in the form of PowerPoint decks. \nAssessment\nExercises\, report and evaluation of exercises \nCourse responsible teachers\nRonald Conze (GFZ Potsdam)\, Thomas Wiersberg (GFZ Potsdam) \nPracticalities\nApplication criteria and priority\n\nA diverse mix of participants is desired.\nPriority will be given to students affiliated with EIT RawMaterials organizations\, but applications are welcomed from other academic institutions and industry.\nCourse size is limited to 16 participants.\nApply here.\n\nAccommodation (room and board)\nApproximate accommodation costs in Potsdam/Berlin: 50 Euros per day \nTravel\nTravel to Potsdam is best via Berlin. Travel during the course between Potsdam and Berlin will be organized by course leaders. \nS+H\, insurance\, Safety equipment and clothing\nnot applicable \nCourse stipends\nSuccessful admissions will be considered for a stipend to offset costs of accommodation and food\, and when possible travel. As a requirement\, the stipends are awarded to participants that are registered for all courses within one theme. Applicants that intend only to participate in a single course (or two courses) within one theme will not be considered for stipends. There is no registration fee to participate in courses offered through I-EDDA-RS.
