SUMMARY:Core characterization and geoscientific data
DESCRIPTION:Purpose and intended learning outcomes\nThis course will convey knowledge and tools for sustainable and secure data acquisition and data/sample documentation at the exploration drill site. It will: \n\nprovide an understanding of modern methods/instrumentation for generating geoscientific information at the drill site (borehole\, core\, fluids).\ndemonstrate the importance of and provide methods for sustainable and secure data & sample acquisition and metadata registration.\nshow various workflows at the (exploration) drill site and provide an understanding of how to utilise and integrate the acquired data at the drill site for immediate knowledge generation.\nprovide a general understanding of the data life cycle and deeper knowledge about introducing new data.\n\nPrerequisites (academic\, special skills needed)\nA basic understanding of solid Earth science and exploration drilling\, and some previous experience from sampling and data generation in related disciplines. \nSchedule and time plan\n08. – 12.06.2020 \nVenue for classroom work and field/lab work\nClassroom and field-work in Jämtland\, Sweden (COSC-2 drilling) \nContent and modules\n\nIntroduction to (exploration) drilling & drilling technology (the site of geoscientific work)\nCommon practices of data acquisition during exploration drilling (status quo)\nAdvanced/novel exploration data acquisition practices\n\nRecent developments\nLeading industry practices\, including “Lab-at-Rig” real-time geochemistry and mineralogy (MSCL\, DMT\, OLGA)\n\n\nData acquisition and instrumentation during scientific drilling (instruments\, procedures\, basic rules in the documentation) and application in exploration drilling\n\nOperational data and information management\nUnique identifier basics: the International GeoSample Number (IGSN)\nData capture at the drill site: Drilling Information System (DIS)\n\n\nData from the borehole: downhole logging & testing\nOperational quality control of data and transfer to curation systems\nDrill site geoscientific set-up\, from simple to advanced\n\nInstruction and course literature\nNo specific literature to be read prior to the course. Documentation will be distributed during the course. \nAssessment\nReport \nCourse responsible teachers\nHenning Lorenz (Uppsala University) \nPracticalities\nApplication criteria and priority\n\nA diverse mix of participants is desired\nPriority will be given to students affiliated with EIT RawMaterials organizations\, but applications are welcomed from other academic institutions and industry.\nCourse size is limited to 16 participants.\nApply here.\n\nAccommodation (room and board)\nApproximate accommodation: Maximum 50 Euros per day. \nTravel\nArrival/departure will be coordinated. The following options exist: \n\nAir travel to Åre-Östersund airport (OSD)\, about 1 h drive to Järpen.\nTrain to Järpen railway station.\n\nS+H\, insurance\, Safety equipment and clothing\nInsurance required\, safety equipment will be provided. \nCourse stipends\nSuccessful admissions will be considered for a stipend to offset costs of accommodation and food\, and when possible travel. As a requirement the stipends are awarded to participants that are registered for all courses within one theme. Applicants that intend only to participate in a single course (or two courses) within one theme will not be considered for stipends. There is no registration fee to participate in courses offered through I-EDDA-RS.
