SUMMARY:European Innovation Summit
DESCRIPTION:From 7 – 11 December 2020\, the Knowledge for Innovation Forum will take the pulse of Europe’s innovation ecosystem as policymakers\, scientists\, researchers\, entrepreneurs\, investors and startups will engage in the 12th edition of the European Innovation Summit \nFor over a decade\, K4l has stressed the importance of innovation to solve major problems. \nNow more than ever\, we not only need a robust innovation policy but a set of policies that rely on innovation in all domains. The Summit in December entitled “Towards a European Innovation Area” will discuss how research and innovation stakeholders will support the green and digital transition in joining forces from across Europe. \nThe programme of the 12 EIS is covering a broad range of topics that relate to major recently launched policy initiatives and the imminent launch of Horizon Europe: \n\nInnovation Policy\nHorizon Europe / European Partnerships\nAI & Big Data for Innovation\nGreening Europe\nDigital Transition\nWomen Investors and Women-Led Startups\n\nIn addition to Plenary sessions\, there will be panel discussions organised by European Partnerships\, and more specific topics will be addressed on the initiative of K4I members and summit partners. \nWe are happy to announce that Ms Mariya Gabriel\, Commissioner for Innovation\, Research\, Culture\, Education and Youth\, confirmed her participation for the Opening Ceremony on 7 December\, 18:00.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Machine Learning Steel Properties Simulation
DESCRIPTION:EIT RawMaterials consortiums EndureIT and CorTools have the common goal to develop machine learning based software for the purpose of steel characteristics simulation\, focusing on embrittlement and corrosion respectively. Extended simulation capabilities would support a larger degree of steel optimization and have incalculable effects on the steel industry and the society. \nOn 10 December 2020\, EndureIT and CorTools project partner Ferritico will host a public webinar together with EIT RawMaterials and the project consortiums. The webinar will focus on machine learning steel properties simulation and present the solutions being developed in the projects. \nIndustrial steel development\, manufacturing and implementation are time-consuming\, inefficient and manual processes\, but digitalization has the potential to change this. These processes are characterized by significant trial-and-error and physical testing as conventional physical modelling-based simulation software cannot simulate with satisfying accuracy for all steels and processes.  \nResearch shows that a data-driven machine learning approach can outperform physical modelling\, in terms of simulation accuracy and effectiveness\, for many steel characteristics. Hence\, machine learning-based steel simulation is becoming an important complement to physical-based modelling.  \nOne of the key success factors for developing machine learning software for steel simulation is data availability. Therefore\, collaboration and setting up consortiums to pool data where each partner e.g. has data for a certain steel composition range and property is of great importance.  \nFerritico\, a Spin-off from steel research made at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, is developing simulation software for the steel and manufacturing industry\, combining metallurgical know-how and physical modelling with development of large databases and machine learning models.  \nEIT RawMaterials CorTools project is developing a corrosion resistance prediction model. Consortium partners are VTT\, Outotec\, Boliden\, Outokumpu\, Tecnalia\, ZAG and DMS.  \nEIT RawMaterials EndureIT project is developing an embrittlement prediction model. Consortium partners are KTH\, CEA and Outokumpu.

DESCRIPTION:The two-days International Virtual Workshop on CRM Innovations Frontiers represents a real opportunity to know the latest trends of the innovation in the various aspects of the critical raw materials world from the perspective of companies\, universities\, research institutions and public administrations.\nThe EIT RawMaterials is an international platform for innovation funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The EIT has created the Knowledge Innovation Communities (KIC)\, that aim to promote innovation and education in Europe’s crucial sectors\, supporting entrepreneurship and enhancing the passage of new ideas from the incubation phase to the market. \nThe EIT RawMaterials started at the end of 2014 and is particularly committed to addressing the global challenge of supplying raw materials in Europe\, through programs and projects that aim to develop technology throughout the entire value chain of raw materials: from the exploration of resources to the mining industry\, from metallurgical processes to the replacement of critical or toxic or rare raw materials\, from the recycling and reuse of end-of-life product materials to the design of products for the circular economy. \nAs part of regional development programs\, the EIT RawMaterials has created the Regional Center South Italy (RCSI)\, a Hub located in the Italian Puglia Region and coordinated by ENEA\, in order to increase the involvement of local ecosystems in the activities of KIC and its partnership.
