DESCRIPTION:The exploration\, evaluation\, valuation and reporting of mineral deposits is a process shaped by local and global economic\, social and political variables\, forces and actors rather than only by technology and the geology\, metallogeny\, physical and chemical properties of ores and mineral deposits. \nProgramme\nCourse description \nThis foundation course is an introduction to the forces shaping and the life cycle of the mineral projects – from the exploration target stage to evaluation\, mining and processing\, tailings management and mine restart or final mine closure. \nThe course is divided into nine chapters: 1 – Current Trends and New Frontiers\, 2 – Markets\, 3 – Society and Sustainable development\, 4 – Exploration\, 5 – (E)Valuation\, 6 – Mining\, 7 – Processing\, 8 – Circular Economy and 9 – Mine Closure or Starting Over. \nThis online course can be taken in isolation or as an introduction to other courses\, online – Natural\, Social And Economic Forces Shaping The Mineral Industry – or presential\, such as: \n\nExploration\, (E)Valuation And Reporting Of Mineral Deposits\,\nValuation And Reporting Of Mineral Assets\,\nReporting in the Mineral Industry – Resources & reserves\, Asset valuation\, Sustainability & Social Responsibility\,\nCorporate Social Responsibility – A Life-Cycle Assessment from Prospect to Closure and\nRaw Materials and Energy in the XXI Century and Beyond A Big Data and Data Science Drive.\n\nCourse contents \nThis is an introductory course with nine chapters and eight modules during eight weeks: \n\nWeek 1: Chapters 1 – Current Trends and New Frontiers\, 2 – Markets and 3 – Society and Sustainable development.\nWeek 2: Chapter 4 – Exploration\,\nWeek 3: Chapter 5 – (E)Valuation\,\nWeek 4: Chapter 6 – Mining\,\nWeek 5: Chapter 6 – Mining (continued).\nWeek 6: Chapter 7 – Processing\,\nWeek 7: Chapter 8 – Circular Economy\nWeek 8: Chapter 9 – Mine Closure or Starting Over.\n\nThe course is designed for a weekly time investment of 1\,5 hours. SUMMARY:Diamonds and other gems: exploration\, evaluation and mining of their deposits 2
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of the African diamond fields (South Africa\, Namibia\, Congo and Angola)\, in conjunction with the rise of the United States into the world economic leadership fueled the rapid development of the diamond industry. New deposits were found in Australia and Canada in the last quarter of the XX century (after the communist USSR – now Russia – also became a major diamond source in the second half of the XX century). \nProgramme\nCourse description \nNew discoveries and technologies\, economic shocks after social and humanitarian crises\, competitive pressure from other products and changing attitudes reshaped the industry\, not a cartel anymore in the XXI century. De Beers (now wholly owned by Anglo America) and Alrosa (Russia) are the main producers – one third of the market – with many other players of all sizes active in the five continents. \nDespite the technological advances and the investment poured into exploration\, the discovery of new world scale deposits has lagged and many mines reaching maturity\, with long term implications. This short course presents and discusses the techniques used in the exploration\, (evaluation) and valuation of diamond deposits with recourse (mostly) to real cases and datasets. \nCourse contents \nThis is one of two courses on diamonds and diamond deposits – the other one is dedicated to the diamonds’ properties\, markets and value. Although they cover separate issues\, these courses can be taken independently (none is a pre-requisite for the other). \nThis is an introductory course with three chapters during three weeks: \n\nWeek 1: Chapters 1 – Diamonds and diamond deposits – how are they different?\nWeek 2: Chapter 2 – Exploration of diamond deposits – how can they be found?\nWeek 3: Chapter 3 – Evaluation and valuation of diamond deposits – how much are they worth?\nWeek 4: Chapter 4 – Challenges in real diamond projects – how to develop a deposit?
