SUMMARY:Diamonds and other gems: properties\, markets and value 2
DESCRIPTION:Natural\, rare\, beautiful\, durable materials – the stuff of legend\, gems attract us and excite our imagination. Diamonds have been known\, coveted and used by humankind since Antiquity; India was their only source until around 1723\, when they were discovered in Brazil. \nProgramme\nCourse description \nIn modern times\, diamonds and other gems become popular and global\, with successful marketing campaigns run in the US (first)\, Japan and China turning what was a status symbol for the few very rich into a common ritual associated to love and marriage of the (well-off) commoners. \nNotwithstanding their allure\, gems are subject to the laws of physics\, geology and economy. This course is about the properties\, value and markets of gems\, diamond being king amongst them. \nCourse contents \nThis is one of two courses on diamonds and diamond deposits – the other one is dedicated to the exploration\, evaluation and mining of diamond deposits. Although they cover separate issues\, these courses can be taken independently (none is a pre-requisite for the other). \nThis is an introductory course with three chapters during three weeks: \n\nWeek 1: Chapters 1 – The markets and applications for diamonds – is there a future?\nWeek 2: Chapter 2 – Diamond pricing models: the 4C and more – are diamonds just overpriced carbon?\nWeek 3: Chapter 3 – Cut diamonds\, rough diamonds\, synthetic diamonds – how different are they?\n\nThe course is designed for a weekly time investment of 1\,5 hours. Naturally\, should the participant wish to further study reading the selected bibliography made available and participating in forum discussions (see above) – which we recommend\, as it is an opportunity to learn from their peers\, the time investment is higher. SUMMARY:Lightweight Professional: Introductory Module
DESCRIPTION:  \nLightweight Professional is going online! All modules of the lightweight professional course are currently being converted to an online format.  There will be no classroom seminars in 2020. All further information and dates will be announced here soon.\nReducing the weight of structures has in recent years become a critical point of focus for many different sectors\, such as machine building\, transportation and civil construction. The appropriate handling of materials in lightweight design structures is the key success factor for preserving resources and reducing costs. Unfortunately\, practical experience often shows that designing and handling rules for new materials are not being respected. \nThe professional training concept underlying the »lightweight professional« courses address this issue. \nWithin these courses\, industrial employees (managers as well as engineers and technical staff members) will not only obtain information\, but also acquire the knowledge in a manner appropriate to their individual educational backgrounds.  Based on results from a recent Europe-wide survey\, the content and the format of the »lightweight professional courses« are designed to meet industrial needs. \nLightweight professional courses aim to deliver high quality content and ready-to-use practical information. Participants will experience an open environment atmosphere with the opportunity to exchange experiences with other participants and industrial branches. \nThe courses follow the requirements of ISO EN 17024 and are certified by an external accreditation body.

SUMMARY:Diamonds and other gems: exploration\, evaluation and mining of their deposits 2
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of the African diamond fields (South Africa\, Namibia\, Congo and Angola)\, in conjunction with the rise of the United States into the world economic leadership fueled the rapid development of the diamond industry. New deposits were found in Australia and Canada in the last quarter of the XX century (after the communist USSR – now Russia – also became a major diamond source in the second half of the XX century). \nProgramme\nCourse description \nNew discoveries and technologies\, economic shocks after social and humanitarian crises\, competitive pressure from other products and changing attitudes reshaped the industry\, not a cartel anymore in the XXI century. De Beers (now wholly owned by Anglo America) and Alrosa (Russia) are the main producers – one third of the market – with many other players of all sizes active in the five continents. \nDespite the technological advances and the investment poured into exploration\, the discovery of new world scale deposits has lagged and many mines reaching maturity\, with long term implications. This short course presents and discusses the techniques used in the exploration\, (evaluation) and valuation of diamond deposits with recourse (mostly) to real cases and datasets. \nCourse contents \nThis is one of two courses on diamonds and diamond deposits – the other one is dedicated to the diamonds’ properties\, markets and value. Although they cover separate issues\, these courses can be taken independently (none is a pre-requisite for the other). \nThis is an introductory course with three chapters during three weeks: \n\nWeek 1: Chapters 1 – Diamonds and diamond deposits – how are they different?\nWeek 2: Chapter 2 – Exploration of diamond deposits – how can they be found?\nWeek 3: Chapter 3 – Evaluation and valuation of diamond deposits – how much are they worth?\nWeek 4: Chapter 4 – Challenges in real diamond projects – how to develop a deposit? How is ore mined and processed and diamonds recovered?\n\nThe course is designed for a weekly time investment of 1\,5 hours. Naturally\, should the participant wish to further study reading the selected bibliography made available and participating in forum discussions (see above) – which we recommend\, as it is an opportunity to learn from their peers\, the time investment is higher. This is\, however\, flexible and entirely optional. \nType of training \nThis course is designed as distance-learning. It is organized in modules along three weeks.
