SUMMARY:Natural\, social and economic forced shaping the mineral industry - how will the mineral industry evolve? 2
DESCRIPTION:The course discusses the natural\, social and economic forces and events that shape the mineral industry. \nProgramme\nCourse description \nThe mineral industry is subject to \n\nits natural constraints – the characteristics of known and potential mineral deposits\, the growing complexity and increased access difficulty to mineral and energy resources and\, e.g. climate change\,\na wide variety of possible external shocks – e.g. war\, commercial conflicts\, financial crisis\, pandemics and social clashes\, and\nthe technological\, economical and social trends – including political risk\, global power shifts\, market volatility\, climate change\, circular economy\, the companies’ social responsibility and social license to operate\, the world’s population demographic and available income growth.\n\nHow will the mineral industry evolve subject to those forces and events? Rather than a traditional course\, a collaborative workshop; rather than a presentation\, a discussion – the course aims to involve the participants in discussions leading into insights of the future of the mineral industry. \nCourse contents \nThis is an introductory course with five chapters and six modules during five weeks \n\nWeek 1: Chapter 1 – Mother Nature – Minerals and Mineral deposits\, pandemics and Climate Change\,\nWeek 2: Chapter 2 – Social and Economic Trends\,\nWeek 3: Chapter 3 – Global power shifts\,\nWeek 4: Chapter 4 – Technology disruption and the rise of the machines\,\nWeek 5: Chapter 5 – New frontiers and insights into the future.\n\nThe course is designed for a weekly time investment of 1\,5 hours. Naturally\, should the participant wish to further study reading the selected bibliography made available and participating in forum discussions (see above) – which we recommend\, as it is an opportunity to learn from their peers\, the time investment is higher. This is\, however\, flexible and entirely optional. \nType of training \nThis course is designed as distance-learning. It is organized in modules along five weeks. Each module includes: \n\nPre-recorded video materials and quizzes – for independent learning.\nSelected bibliography – for independent learning.\nA weekly one-and-a-half hour live workshop\, including the presentation and discussion of the module topics. The live session will include open discussions\, work in smaller groups and the elaboration of an informal report on the theme discussed.\n\nThe course will also have a dedicated LinkedIn group for course follow-up\, exchange and discussion of ideas and course topics. \nObjectives and outcomes \nAfter the course participants will have a wide range knowledge of and be able to identify the forces shaping the mineral industry\, be they economic\, social\, technological or natural and of the main. \nParticipants will also be able to identify and characterise the development scenarios for the industry in the XXI century. \nParticipants will be able to integrate the new knowledge on the raw materials industry (and their companies and projects) into their decision-making\, policy-design or reporting processes. \nLanguage \nEnglish \nRequirements \nParticipants would require their own laptop and a stable high-speed internet connection to take part in this course. \nTarget Group\nThe course’s intended audience includes professionals\, managers\, decision-makers and post-graduate students involved in the raw materials industry and interested in discussing and get an insight into future scenarios for the mineral industry: \n\nManagers of financial institutions and funds\,\nPotential investors in raw materials projects\,\nOfficials from government (local\, state and federal) agencies and institutions\,\nMedia professionals covering the mineral industry\,\nGraduate and post-graduate geology\, mining\, mineral processing and metallurgy students\,\nManagers of mining and exploration companies.

DESCRIPTION:Consumers\, employees\, and investors are demanding that companies address social and environmental problems as core to their marketplace success. This course helps participants understand and apply emerging holistic methodologies for integrative product service system design\, cleaner production\, sustainable consumption and transformative business models for the circular economy\, such as B Corporations. \nProgramme\nCourse description \nThis course\, taught in five sections\, is based on practical learning through experiential education and supplemental readings. It will inspire participants and empower them to become socially conscious business leaders who can advance their careers and their companies by successfully moving forward in this exciting new economy. \nThe overall curriculum helps provides holistic approaches for cleaner production\, sustainable consumption\, and new company structures based on a triple-bottom line (people\, planet\, profit) approach to business. New business models\, such as Certified B Corporations and Legal Benefit Corporations\, will be introduced with an emphasis on a company’s performance in five impact areas: community\, environment\, workers\, customer and good governance through transparency and accountability. \nParticipants will learn how to achieve positive transformative change through better planning\, management\, and knowledge platforms. Among subject areas covered will be improving production/processing facilities\, enhancing product-service systems\, empowering employees\, and broadening from a shareholder-only orientation to engage up- and downstream stakeholders – including suppliers\, customers\, and communities. \nCourse content \nThe content of the course are divided into five sections. The broad outline are as follows: \nSection-1\nExpanding the understanding of the value chain\, from production\, processing\, wholesaling\, retailing and valorising wastes in transitioning to sustainable circular economies. \nGroup work: Corporate value stream mapping for any industrial sector. \nSection-2\nConcepts of benefit corporation for the transitions to sustainable and conscious businesses within sustainable circular economies within the climate emergency. \nGroup assignment: Planning for implementation of cleaner production\, industrial ecology\, circular economy and conscious business approaches in the participant’s own company. \nSection-3\nWhy and how can cleaner production\, sustainable consumption\, industrial ecology and circular economy\, concepts and approaches help to ensure food\, water and societal security in the context of climate changes and population growth? \nSection-4\nSustainable consumption and production and  learning how to prevent\, minimize and to valorise wastes. \nSection-5\nUnderstanding socially conscious businesses\, purposeful design of products-service systems\, sharing platforms and sharing economy business models and strategies. \nGroup presentation: Based on the section 2 assignment; discussion on the cleaner production strategies\, tools and conscious business approaches thus prepared by course participants. \nNote:\nAfter the completion of this course\, a Skype-consultation (min. 1 hour) will be offered in a group for each company participants\, who will analyze and submit their own organization’s opportunity and challenges to become a truly sustainable company within a circular economies in the context of climate emergency. \nType of training \n\nFace-to-face teaching\nPeer-to-peer workshops\nGuided independent learning\nGroup presentation\nParticipant’s presentations about their company’s challenges and opportunities to build upon the lessons learned by each participant.\n\nObjectives and outcome \n\nEnhance knowledge of the roles of cleaner production\, industrial ecology and the circular economy concepts and tools in present and future companies\, in the context of climate changes and related challenges.\nUnderstanding of how and why companies can and should provide benefits for people\, planet and profits at the same time.\nLearn how to implement cleaner production\, concepts\, tools and policies into their company.\nAnalyse their own organization’s opportunities and challenges for implementing the lessons they learned in the course and to project how their new visions and knowledge will help their companies to contribute to societal transition to truly sustainable\, circular economies in the context of climate changes and other challenges.\n\nLanguage \nEnglish \nTarget Group\n\nLeaders and managers of companies across all industrial sectors.\nSustainability professionals\, supply chain managers\, technical managers\, product  designers in the field of industrial manufacturing\, assembling\, trading\, recycling etc.\nStart-ups founders\, and others who want to develop future-proof circular solutions and benefit corporation.
