DESCRIPTION:Natural\, rare\, beautiful\, durable materials – the stuff of legend\, gems attract us and excite our imagination. Diamonds have been known\, coveted and used by humankind since Antiquity; India was their only source until around 1723\, when they were discovered in Brazil. \nProgramme\nCourse description \nIn modern times\, diamonds and other gems become popular and global\, with successful marketing campaigns run in the US (first)\, Japan and China turning what was a status symbol for the few very rich into a common ritual associated to love and marriage of the (well-off) commoners. \nNotwithstanding their allure\, gems are subject to the laws of physics\, geology and economy. This course is about the properties\, value and markets of gems\, diamond being king amongst them. \nCourse contents \nThis is one of two courses on diamonds and diamond deposits – the other one is dedicated to the exploration\, evaluation and mining of diamond deposits. SUMMARY:Diamonds and other gems: exploration\, evaluation and mining of their deposits 1
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of the African diamond fields (South Africa\, Namibia\, Congo and Angola)\, in conjunction with the rise of the United States into the world economic leadership fueled the rapid development of the diamond industry. New deposits were found in Australia and Canada in the last quarter of the XX century (after the communist USSR – now Russia – also became a major diamond source in the second half of the XX century). \nProgramme\nCourse description \nNew discoveries and technologies\, economic shocks after social and humanitarian crises\, competitive pressure from other products and changing attitudes reshaped the industry\, not a cartel anymore in the XXI century. De Beers (now wholly owned by Anglo America) and Alrosa (Russia) are the main producers – one third of the market – with many other players of all sizes active in the five continents. \nDespite the technological advances and the investment poured into exploration\, the discovery of new world scale deposits has lagged and many mines reaching maturity\, with long term implications. This short course presents and discusses the techniques used in the exploration\, (evaluation) and valuation of diamond deposits with recourse (mostly) to real cases and datasets. \nCourse contents \nThis is one of two courses on diamonds and diamond deposits – the other one is dedicated to the diamonds’ properties\, markets and value. SUMMARY:Water Scarcity InnoWise Challenge Lab
DESCRIPTION:The Spanish finale where top-notch startups present their innovative solutions for water scarcity for Southern Europe.\nThe InnoWise Challenge Lab in Málaga\, Spain\, is one of the three final competitions for startups with the goal of finding innovations for water scarcity in Southern Europe. This InnoWise Challenge Lab will take place during the annual Smart Agrifood Summit – a major event on innovation and entrepreneurship in the agrifood sector. \nAfter three months of intensive training and specialized workshops from the agrifood and water industry’s finest experts\, a total of ten startups will be put to the test. These companies will hear from keynote speakers\, participate in a round-table on “Rethinking the Water Scarcity Innovation” and\, of course\, network with their peers and with the industry’s top professionals. \nFinally\, the event will culminate in a live “pitching competition”; the startup that wins the first place will receive a 10\,000€ award. Second place winner will receive a 5\,000€ prize. \nThis is set to be a high-profile and incredibly exciting event.
