SUMMARY:Visual3D Conference
DESCRIPTION:Visualization of 3D/4D content in geosciences\, exploration and mining\nThe Visual3D conference 2019 will be an opportunity for communication of recent and ongoing advances in the visualization of 3D/4D content in geosciences\, exploration and mining. A special focus will be the linking of research\, education and industry\, as well as the integration of multi-disciplinary data and their visualization in three and four dimensions. \nThe conference format will consist of regular plenary sessions of oral contributions (including keynotes)\, as well as a poster and demonstration session. \nTechnical Program\n\nEducation\nVirtual and augmented reality (VAR) visualization of 3D/4D content will be an essential tool for education in the near future\, in an academic context\, as well as for policymakers\, school children and the wider society. The appealing and immersive nature of these visualization technologies open up possibilities to bring geoscientific content from the field into the classroom\, and thereby attract new talent. This session focuses on recent and ongoing projects and initiatives to develop VAR in geosciences for education purposes. We also welcome contributions to similar projects and initiatives in the mining and wider raw materials sector. \n\nOutreach & communication\n\n\nThis session focuses on different possibilities of communicating and presenting geomodels. This includes scientific and popular science communication\, wider society learning\, industrial outreach\, web-based services and visualization tools such as virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. We encourage submissions showing cases of communication and presentation of geomodels that illustrate the wide possibilities provided by modern technologies. \n\n\n\nApplications and case studies\n\n\nThis session focuses on how 3D-visualization and modelling tools may be applied for the purposes of scientific research and industrial and societal usage. We specifically encourage submissions highlighting innovative and cross-disciplinary use of modelling/visualization tools and software packages. We also welcome presentations arising from real-life case-studies illustrating the potential of digital 3D-modelling and visualization in answering the studied problems and improving the applicability of the geoscientific research. The presentations are not tied to any specific geological environment but should optimally cover a wide spectrum of application areas. \n\nResearch and development\n\n\nThe main strength of 3D geological modeling is to bring different kinds of data and knowledge into consistency in a quantitative framework. This integration work leads to multi- and/or trans-disciplinary models. This session will focus on current bottlenecks for such an integration and latest developments in the efficient production and visualisation of realistic 3D geological models: geological modeling approaches\, either based on traditional or new methods\, combination of different kinds of models (e.g. joint modeling of geology and BIM\, joint interpretation of large point clouds and regional scale models\, joint inversions)\, automatic extraction of structural features and knowledge from heterogeneous data\, quantification and visualization of uncertainty. We strongly encourage contributions from related research fields such as procedural modeling and computer graphics\, machine learning and AI field\, enabling cross-fertilization with traditional geological modeling approaches. \n\n\n\n\n\nSoftware and implementation\n\n\nAdvancements in computer graphics and modelling are rapidly changing the way we visualize and interact with 3D geological models. This session aims to explore new algorithms and tools and their application in geoscience. This includes\, on the one hand\, rendering—e.g. VR/AR\, GIS systems\, Lidar scanner\, HPC visualization—and on the other hand\, different mathematical formulations to better represent the subsurface—e.g. implicit/explicit interpolations\,  Bézier surfaces or kinematic approaches. The session will aim the attention particularly on implementations of the mentioned methods with a special interest in open-source libraries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoster and interactive content\n\n\nIn the joint poster and interactive content session\, we welcome contributions to all thematic session and to the general subject of 3D visualization in geosciences. In addition to the classical posters\, we provide space for alternative forms of analogue and digital presentation\, and a collection of AR and VR devices will be available for demonstrations. Especially student groups and start-ups are invited to share their projects and demonstrate the technology. DESCRIPTION:The RMUD will form part of the EIT Festival organised in Otaniemi\, Espoo\, Finland as one of the official side events of Finland’s EU Presidency\, where EIT RawMaterials\, EIT Digital\, and EIT Food will all be present. The event will take place in multiple locations across Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus. The main theme of the event is Circular Economy as well as Substitution and Recycling. \nPlanned activities include: \n\nScience Expo & Lab Tours\nMaterials Matter Art & Science Exhibition displayed at the Finnish EU Presidency at Finlandia Hall.
