SUMMARY:EIT RawMaterials Exploration workshop 2018
DESCRIPTION:The improved success rate for the mineral exploration industry requires improved models of the subsurface. A better understanding of the geology and geological models reduces the exploration risk by focusing investments to address outstanding questions or missing data that matter the most and\, ultimately\, support decision making. \nEmploying a Mineral Systems approach requires that many kinds of data are captured\, compiled and visualized in 3D\, including geophysical data (e.g. magnetics\, EM\, gravity\, radiometric and seismic)\, geological maps\, outcrop data\, structural data\, geochronology\, borehole logs\, structural models\, geological models\, mineralogy\, alteration mineral assemblages\, metamorphic mineral assemblages\, spanning scales of observations from micrometer to kilometers laterally and vertically. This\, in turn\, requires a methodology and software development that can handle both the data capture and visualization with constraints that are determined from e.g. analogue studies etc. \nThis Mineral Systems concept\, integrating geodata at a range of scales\, has been around for more than two decades\, and meanwhile\, the bodies of available geodata for many countries have grown\, yet this has not resulted in a significant increase in discovery rates. \nTherefore\, the workshop will seek to define which missing data is crucial for a given exploration model and assess how to make the most use of available geodata. The workshop starts by setting the scene for mineral exploration as an industry and will then go on to discuss new initiatives under the EIT RawMaterials Innovation Community. The second day will mainly concentrate on discussing the role of remote sensing data – primarily geophysics and how such data can be integrated into the geological model that\, in turn\, defines the basis for the exploration rationale and the quality of which defines the success rate. \nStyle: plenary presentation sessions with time for discussions and separate networking opportunities. SUMMARY:Free Webinar: The Added Value For The European Economy of Recycling of Secondary Critical Raw Material Within Europe
DESCRIPTION:Critical Raw Materials CRMs are crucial to Europe’s Economy\, but they also have high risk associated to their supply. CRMs are used in environmental technologies\, consumer electronics\, health steel making\, defense technology\, space exploration and aviation. However\, there is also lack of viable substitutes due to very unique and reliable properties of those materials. Thus\, EU should find a strategy to reduce the Union’s reliance on CRMs. \nThe EU has many and uncharacterised and unexplored deposits. However\, the existing economic and regulatory climate\, combined with growing land use competition\, limits the exploitation. Thus\, in terms of recycling\, secondary supplies can reduce the demand for primary materials\, overcoming the deposit deficiency. PGMs (Pt\, Pd\, Rh) which are included in CRMs\, are mainly used in automobile catalytic converters to reduce NOx to nitrogen as well as to oxidise CO. The concentration of the PGMs in catalytic converters is higher than in ores\, therefore\, the recovery of the PGMs from spent car catalytic converters could be a significant source to obtain these precious metals\, reprocess and produce new functional materials. Thus\, it is of major importance to map the recovery of raw materials\, such as Platinum Group Metals PGMs from products across Europe.
