SUMMARY:EIT RawMaterials at the European Mineral Resources Conference - EUMICON 2018
DESCRIPTION:Automated cars\, SMART technology\, Internet of Things – the technological revolution will bring about a whole new range of products and innovative services in the coming decades. These developments will also have a significant impact on the added value of the extractive industry and its downstream branches. That is why the European raw materials initiative\, EUMICON\, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism of the Republic of Austria\, is organizing an international raw materials conference in Vienna in autumn 2018\, within the scope of the Austrian EU Council Presidency. \nThe political conditions will also act as a significant driver – or indeed a brakeman. Access to raw materials\, circular economy\, or robust and fair trade with other regions of the world – all of these factors will also shape the future of the European extractive industry and its value added. We would like to help shape this future a little. \n\n\n\n\nStakeholder Dialogue\nAgainst the backdrop of rapid and „disruptive” technological change\, transforming value-creation chains and challenges in securing know-how\, European and cross-industry solidarity is needed. \nIn preparation for the EUMICON Conference in the framework of the EU Council Presidency\, a stakeholder initiative will\, therefore\, be started that attempts to define concrete answers and innovative solutions to strengthen resource-based value-creation chains „Made in Europe”: \n\nWhich technologies and processes will shape our future?\nHow do we secure the know-how for these future technologies?\nWhat role will mineral resources and intelligent materials play?\nWhat political\, economic and scientific conditions do we need to create?\n\nAs part of four high-level workshops in Brussels\, Stuttgart\, Sofia and Vienna\, relevant stakeholders from politics\, science\, the industry and civil society are invited to discuss innovative solutions using the design thinking method. \n\n\n\n\n\nTopics\n\nPolitics & Resources\nHuman & Technology\nMaterials & Industry\nSmart Future & Sustainability\n\nEIT RawMaterials Community at the EUMICON 2018\nMetals\, minerals and materials are critically important for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To achieve sustainable raw materials supply\, mining must be strengthened in Europe\, and increased supply from secondary sources must be secured through innovations in recycling. Sustainable supply and consumption of raw materials are important for the move towards a Circular Economy. From a raw materials value chain perspective\, three objectives are key in a circular economy: bringing materials into the loop in a sustainable way\, keeping materials in the loop for as long as possible\, and minimizing waste. \nDr Karen Hanghøj\, CEO at EIT RawMaterials\, and Peter Moser\, Montanuniversitaet Leoben\, EIT RawMaterials Steering Committee Chair Innovation Hub (CLC) East\, will give presentations at the EUMICON 2018 to strengthen the view towards the importance of Raw Materials for the future of Europe. \nThe conference is a part of the Austrian Presidency during which the future R&D priorities for the period 2020-2030 will be decided. EIT RawMaterials partners are invited to join the EUMICON 2018 to ensure a high presence of the Innovation Community. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:RawMaterials University Day at the University of Padova
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of RawMaterials University Day (RMUD) will take place over two days\, on 27 and 28 September\, at the University of Padova in Italy. The RMUD events will play an integral role in the 2018 open dissemination event of the University of Padova\, NEMES (Non è magia è scienza – It’s science\, not magic) This successful event has taken place annually since 2007 and is open to the general public of the city of Padova. \nThe RMUD event will be an occasion to establish common ground for dissemination activities for local research institutions\, public authorities and industries\, especially aimed at making the public aware of the crucial importance of the raw materials value chain. \nThe target audience will include students (age group 10-16) up to school leavers (age group 17-18)\, although all the NEMES activities and the RMUD will be open to the general public. \nSpecial attention will be devoted to school leavers interested in future study and job opportunities. Hints and suggestions for career development and job placement will be offered\, together with information on specific multidisciplinary curricula related to raw material themes. \nFor the general public\, the crucial role of science and technology in the sustainability and progress of society will be highlighted by researchers involved at the frontier of knowledge\, in order to raise awareness of the investigation and management of raw materials. \nStudy and career opportunities specifically targeted to Bachelor\, Master and PhD degree students in the area of raw materials research and technology will be highlighted\, based on live experiences from the Alumni di Chimica UniPd group\, dedicated talks of invited speakers from industry\, and specific info-points dedicated to careers in this area. \nMany students already involved in their thesis work will be actively involved as demonstrators and speakers. The raw materials value chain will be highlighted as much as possible\, in its whole extension\, in including exploration; extraction\, and with a particular emphasis on processing\, recycling\, substitution and circular economy. \nThe RawMaterials University Day events within NEMES will focus on the role and power of chemistry and engineering knowledge in the transformation of raw materials in Europe for the realization of goods\, through case studies\, histories and live experiments. The development of advanced materials will be presented as a tool for social and economic progress\, and as an environment ideal for young talents. Conferences on topics related to rational and scientific evaluation of environmental issues\, with a particular attention to themes and concepts pertaining to circular economy will be organized as a way to increase confidence in industry activities and sustainable development. \nSome examples of specific topics to be presented within the RMUD:\n\nCircular economy models – Quantitative approaches to modelling the production and recycling of materials\, exemplified by audio-visual tools\nGreen chemistry – Substituting standard chemical processes with low environmental impact and low cost processes\nThe lifecycle of Aluminium – Recycling as a path for achieving new and high performance products\, in a circular economy perspective\n\nTwo main laboratories housed in the main building of the DiSC will be dedicated to live lab performances conducted by experts and university students. Free tours through open stands will be organized to provide the visiting public with a different overviews of natural raw materials\, high tech prototypes and open problems in the raw materials value chain. \nResearchers from the industry world will be invited to prepare case stories for the RMUD\, to give talks and to tutor students that will be involved in the live activities.\nLive experiments will highlight chemical processes (transformation\, production and processing) to shed light on raw material precursors\, their original state in nature\, and their economic and social importance in terms of novel applications and new material development. \nFor more information\, please check the website.

SUMMARY:The European Researchers' Night: MEETmeTONIGHT 2018
DESCRIPTION:The European Researchers’ Night is an annual initiative promoted by the European Union within the Marie Curie actions\, which results in a night event of scientific dissemination simultaneously held in all European countries on the last Friday of September. The general aim is to encourage the meeting and dialogue between researchers and citizens and to enhance the culture of research. \nThe European Researchers’ Night in Milan is usually a two-night event of scientific dissemination with the same aims\, called MEETmeTONIGHT-Face to face with the research. The University of Milano-Bicocca\, Politecnico of Milan and ISTM Institute of Milan\, all of the partners of the RM@Schools 3.0 project\, will be present in one of the 60 MEETmeTONIGHT stands (ST02\, 28-29 September 2018). Here\, active learning experiments on Raw Materials developed within the RM@Schools 3.0 project (practical educational kits\, apps\, serious games) will be proposed to the public\, in particular to school classes and children. \n\nLearn more here!
