SUMMARY:A short course on Earth observation for the raw materials community
DESCRIPTION:The aims of this four-day course are to uncover the potential of Earth observation and remote sensing as important tools for the raw materials community. It offers a hands-on approach to facilitate the comprehension of difficult concepts. The course provides remote sensing basics and potential applications in raw materials exploration\, exploitation\, processing\, recycling and in monitoring and environmental impacts. Also covered are optical passive remote sensing and active remote sensing\, with a focus on the freely available spaceborne acquisitions through the Copernicus programme (Sentinel-1\, Sentinel-2) and the use of open-source software. \nThe course is part of the Copernicus RawMatCop project that aims to demonstrate new applications at the intersection between Earth observation data and the raw materials sector. It is funded by European Commission DG Internal Market\, Industry\, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW)\, and EIT RawMaterials. \nThe course is for Beginners in Earth Observation Applications. By the end of the course\, the participants will: \n\nAcquire the basics of Earth Observation and remote sensing technology with an emphasis on the Copernicus programme and its services\nLearn the use of open-source software for spaceborne image processing\nLearn to use remote sensing to identify and map areas of interest in a mining environment\nLearn the basics of remote sensing possibilities for exploration\nLearn to recognize environmental challenges in the surroundings of mining sites using remote sensing\nAcquire basic abilities to identify stability challenges in mining surroundings\nUnderstand the challenges facing the raw materials value chain (exploration\, extraction\, processing\, recycling\, etc.) and how remote sensing can play a role in their future\n\nTarget Participants\nThe target audience for the course is any individual who is involved in the raw materials community and does not have a background in Earth Observation.  \nThis includes: \n\nemployees of private companies\nemployees in the public sector\nuniversity students\nresearchers interested in venturing into this field.\n\nParticipants should have a good command of English\, a background in science or engineering\, and proficiency in computer use with basic programming skills. \nSign up here

DESCRIPTION:On 12-14 June\, EIT RawMaterials is attending the Euro Mine Expo 2018 in Skellefteå\, Sweden. \nThe Innovation Community on Raw Materials will be represented by the EIT RawMaterials partnership\, including Boliden\, Epiroc\, Outotec\, GTK\, Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU)\, RISE\, LKAB\, LTU\, as well as supported start-ups\, Danalto\, Cassantec\, Eurotab\, Extracthive\, Hovering Solutions\, Radai\, Inkonova\, Retenua\, SpacEarth Technology\, Talpasolutions\, ThingWave\, ReVibe Energy. \nEIT RawMaterials sessions\nOn Wednesday\, 13 June\, EIT RawMaterials will host a Conference Session on Battery Metals at 13:00-15:00. Tablets can be directly reintroduced into a furnace as secondary raw materials or transformed into valuable products. The throughput of the equipment enables metallurgy industries to recycle their by-products and producers of industrial mineral and ores to sell their fines. This innovation will foster the sustainable economy and boost competitiveness by reducing costs. \nExtracthive\nExtracthives skill set is there to meet the specific needs of the various stakeholders throughout the supply chain of non-ferrous metal production\, from primary and secondary producers to processors and right through to the end users\, and finally to the environmental services companies which are responsible for the remediation of legacy sites. \nHovering Solutions\nHovering Solutions works on designing and manufacturing autonomous flying robots (aerial drones) for indoor/underground scenarios based on the development and implementation of novel software\, technology and AD-HOC detailed electronics at component level. \nInkonova\nInkonova develops innovative drones with tilt-rotor technology\, which brings superior performance including body angle control\, orientation\, acceleration and stability. SUMMARY:RawMaterials University Day at the University of Zagreb
DESCRIPTION:The University of Zagreb in Croatia is the organizer of this year’s Innovation Hub CLC East edition of the RawMaterials University Days. The overarching theme is potential\, importance\, education and employment in the raw materials sector. The day will kick off with an opening event at the University of Zagreb rectorate building\, which will be live streamed and followed by a press conference. Following this\, simultaneous thematic events will start at 6 locations\, both within Zagreb as well as in the towns of Varaždin and Sisak. The varied thematic programme will offer 14 laboratory tours\, 12 interactive exercises\, six tours through collections/exhibitions and 21 lectures including showcases of 12 industrial/institutional partners. The target audience is primarily school pupils and future STEM students introducing them to a variety of RM related professions under study programmes of the University of Zagreb\, together with career opportunities. Both the university faculties and the industrial partners involved cover the entire raw materials life cycle with expertise in mining\, geology\, chemical technology\, biotechnology\, metallurgy and waste management. Participants from high schools/grammar schools from different Croatian regions (including the coastal region and the eastern Slavonia region) will be invited and their transportation will be covered.
