SUMMARY:In-Field Lab Session #1: Alloy design – Principles and Theory
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day session will introduce the students to the principles of Alloy design. The underlying theory\, computational thermodynamics and kinetics (CALPHAD) will be briefly presented. The calculation of phase diagrams\, phase equilibria and simulation of phase transformations with special applications to Al-based alloys will be presented and practical examples will be discussed. The emphasis will be on the computational tools to give the students an overview of what can be done. The Thermo-Calc code will be used in all exercises. \nThe session also covers hands-on exercises demonstrating calculation of phase diagrams\, solidification paths\, heat treatment etc. In addition\, there is time allocated for the students to consider problems defined by themselves. \nFor more details and agenda\, please click here. \nRegistration \nThe participation is free of charge. Registration to the In-field lab 4L-Alloys will be managed by KTH \nin cooperation with Padova University (DTG). \nContacts for registration: \nProf. Lars Arnberg (KTH) lars.arnberg@ntnu.no \nProf. Franco Bonollo (Padova University) bonollo@gest.unipd.it \nThe event is a part of the 4L-Alloys project. \n

SUMMARY:Comminution of Minerals
DESCRIPTION:Efficient comminution processes require a careful process design and presume a deep understanding of the grinding fundamentals as well as the appropriate machinery. This machinery includes comminution devices from crushing to fine grinding as well as different kinds of classifiers like sieves\, hydro cyclones\, static and dynamic air classifiers. \nIn the seminar on Comminution of Minerals\, you will learn about the principles of comminution\, how to apply these for the selection of crushing and grinding equipment\, and how to optimize existing grinding circuits in order to increase product yield along with low specific production costs. \n\n\n\n\nThe course has the following objectives and outcomes: \n\nmaterial characterisation in crushing and grinding circuits;\nunderstanding and influencing the fracture behavior in comminution processes;\nbasic knowledge of machinery selection: application\, design\, working principles\, and basic engineering of the different types of crushers and mills in mineral processing;\nprocess related know how: design\, evaluation\, and optimization of crushing and grinding circuits.\n\nPlease click on the image below for more information.

SUMMARY:COMMET 2017 International Symposium on Accelerated Exploration of Novel Metal Systems
DESCRIPTION:Metals and alloys have influenced human life so profoundly that without them the modern world would be inconceivable and could not function successfully. \nThe study of metallurgy is the oldest branch of physical science − over millennia\, it has evolved to become a highly sophisticated research field that influences almost all the sectors of industry. \nTo maintain this strategic industrial strength\, it is imperative that the scientific and industrial communities continue to make new metallurgical discoveries. For breakthrough product developments where limited reference data are available\, a massive number of compositional ranges need screening prior to selecting the interesting chemistries. Therefore\, combinatorial methodologies significantly accelerate the pace of material discovery and optimisation\, in contrast to the traditional\, slow trial-and-error approach. \nThis symposium is (co-)organised by OCAS\, one of the EIT RawMaterials partners. \nRegistration\nPlease register here.
