SUMMARY:Raw Materials University Day at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Raw Materials University Day (RMUD) will take place on 25 September 2017 in Wroclaw\, at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Faculty of Geoengineering\, Mining and Geology)\, which is one of the largest and most dynamically developing technical universities in Poland. \nThe aim of this RMUD is to promote skills and employment in raw materials\, especially in the exploration and processing industrial sectors. The target audience is both young people that are to choose their studies and future graduates (bachelor level) who would like to be informed about the further studies and career opportunities related to raw materials. All participants will be able to take part in numerous presentations\, workshops\, games and discussions\, which will show the huge potential and science achievements in the field of raw materials in an attractive and understandable way. During laboratory tours\, participants will take a scientist-guided trip along the trail of geology\, chemistry and technology\, allowing them to perform some experiments illustrating the process of extraction\, slip resistance tests and modelling of mining facilities. Presentations and workshops will make it possible for participants to find the answers to questions about the diversity\, reserves and  opportunities of Polish raw materials\, the role and tasks of Rock Mechanics\, methods of extracting minerals using various technological systems\, etc. \nThe event programme also includes field activities. Homemade models of volcanic eruptions can be prepared using vinegar and soda. We will try to carry out a “true” hot volcanic eruption with volcanic ash and lava flow. This demonstration will be an introduction to a short story (sometimes surprising) about the raw materials that were formed in such unusual circumstances – like basalt\, porphyry\, sulphur… but also copper ores or diamonds! For those interested\, “geocaching” (a game using GPS Tracker) will be played and a presentation of a proton magnetometer (construction\, principle of operation\, methodology of field measurements\, demonstration of measurements in the field) will be performed. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit a rock quarry (mine extracting rock materials) in Strzegom and see the mining and processing of rock minerals occurring in Lower Silesia first-hand. \nThe RMUD 2017 in Wroclaw will be an excellent opportunity to meet representatives of companies co-operating with the Faculty of Geoengineering\, Mining and Geology under joint research projects or internships and training. \nThe RMUD 2017 in Wroclaw will be connected with the Festival of Science\, which since 1997 has been promoting science among thousands of young people in the Lower Silesian region. We hope this will bring an important added value to the Raw Materials University Day.

SUMMARY:In-Field Lab Session #1: Alloy design – Principles and Theory
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day session will introduce the students to the principles of Alloy design. The underlying theory\, computational thermodynamics and kinetics (CALPHAD) will be briefly presented. The calculation of phase diagrams\, phase equilibria and simulation of phase transformations with special applications to Al-based alloys will be presented and practical examples will be discussed. The emphasis will be on the computational tools to give the students an overview of what can be done. The Thermo-Calc code will be used in all exercises. \nThe session also covers hands-on exercises demonstrating calculation of phase diagrams\, solidification paths\, heat treatment etc. In addition\, there is time allocated for the students to consider problems defined by themselves. \nFor more details and agenda\, please click here. \nRegistration \nThe participation is free of charge. Registration to the In-field lab 4L-Alloys will be managed by KTH \nin cooperation with Padova University (DTG). \nContacts for registration: \nProf. Lars Arnberg (KTH) lars.arnberg@ntnu.no \nProf. Franco Bonollo (Padova University) bonollo@gest.unipd.it \nThe event is a part of the 4L-Alloys project. \n

SUMMARY:Rama-Scene Inception Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Rama-Scene project partners kindly invite members of the EIT RawMaterials Community to attend the Rama-Scene Inception Workshop that will take place on Monday\, 25 September from 9-12h\, which is day 1 of the EIT RawMaterials Information and Brokerage event. \nRegistration \nNeeded beforehand and can be done via the Rama-Scene website. Please register before 19 September. \nDate\, time & location \nMonday\, 25 September 2017\, 9h-12h; Berlin\, Scandic Hotel at Berlin Potsdamer Platz. \nRoom Copenhagen (2nd floor)\, back to back with the EIT RawMaterials Information and Brokerage event. \nBackground \nRama-Scene is an EIT RawMaterials project that helps decision-makers at micro/company level and macro/government level to assess the implications of choices with regard to resource-efficiency improvements on security of supply\, resource-efficiency\, circularity and economic performance. Target groups hence are supply chain managers\, designers and business strategists in companies and policy makers within government. For this aim\, the project will develop a blended learning package complemented by an interactive web-based platform to analyse scenarios for raw materials. The project is executed by Leiden University\, VITO\, TU Delft and Fraunhofer. \nWorkshop objectives \nThe workshop aims to gather information from stakeholders to develop a joint understanding of the needs and requirements for a blended learning package: \n\nWhich educational objectives should be satisfied from the education package?\nWhich technical features are useful to satisfy analytical needs of the tool’s users?\n\nWorkshop participants hence can strongly influence the development of the tool. If desirable\, we can engage workshop participants in the further process and give them early access to the tool\, next to acknowledge them on the project website. We organise the workshop back to back with the EIT RawMaterials Matchmaking event\, so that participants can easily join by travelling a few hours earlier to Berlin\, Germany. \nParticipants \nPotential users of the blended learning package and web-based tool\, from industry and education\, are welcomed to participate in the discussion. \nFor more information\, please contact Arnold Tukker (Tukker@cml.leidenuniv.nl) or An Vercalsteren (an.vercalsteren@vito.be). \nLearn more about the Rama-Scene project here.
