LKAB Deep Talk: Minerals for change – a zero emission future starts in the mine

Minerals are essential in the transition to clean energy and a fossil-free future. A typical electric car requires six times the mineral inputs of a conventional car and the International Energy Association estimates that to reach the Paris Agreement objectives to stay well below 2°C global temperature increase, mineral supply for clean energy technologies need to quadruple by 2040.

Minerals and metals are the start of virtually every value chain, from construction to farming and the supply of clean water. The mining and minerals industry has a unique opportunity to contribute to the ongoing transformation by supplying the needed minerals and developing innovative material solutions that reduce emissions in end applications while at the same time reducing its own environmental and climate impact.

One of many examples of how technology + sustainability drives development are LKAB’s new methods for recycling waste to value and connecting the mine to a circular economy. A future billion-dollar industry and an arena for closer cooperation between University-based science and the industry.
